Gouda has an old city centre with many older residents, and that shows in our work. A large share of our enquiries concern a father or mother moving to housing for older people or a nursing home, or a house that has to be emptied after a death. The children often live in Rotterdam, Utrecht or further away.
That calls for something other than an ordinary clearance. It has to be worked out what the family wants to keep, papers have to be set aside, and there is often a date already fixed with the estate agent or the housing association. Gouda is not a city with one kind of housing. What we have to take away and how we get it out differs from district to district.
The city centre
Around the Markt, the Turfmarkt and the canals there are narrow buildings with steep stairs, sometimes three or four storeys high. A sofa does not always fit through the stairwell there. We then take it apart or work with a furniture hoist, and we apply to the municipality of Gouda for an exemption to load and unload.
Korte Akkeren, Bloemendaal, Oosterwei
Terraced houses and blocks of flats from the nineteen fifties to the eighties. Easy to reach, but often with heavy carpet, built-in wall cupboards and a loft holding forty years of belongings. This is where we carry out most clearances, Kort Haarlem included.
Goverwelle, Plaswijck, Westergouwe
Newer family homes with more volume, fitted kitchens and wardrobes. For a sale the buyer often asks for the flooring, curtain rails or light fittings to come out. We include that on the same day if you say so during the survey.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about house clearance in Gouda
We do not live in Gouda. Can you arrange everything from a distance?
Yes, that happens often. The survey can take place over a video call, we consult you about personal belongings using photographs, and we collect and return the keys at the notary, estate agent or housing association. You do not have to be there.
How do you get furniture out of a canal house with a steep staircase?
Anything that will not fit through the stairwell whole, we take apart. If that is not possible, we work with a furniture hoist through the window. For loading and unloading in the narrow streets we apply to the municipality of Gouda for an exemption where needed.
The house stands on wooden piles and the floors are out of true. Is that a problem?
For emptying it usually is not. Many old Gouda buildings stand on piles in the peat soil. We allow for that with heavy items and we protect floors and stairs. If we see something structural that is not right during the survey, we will say so.
What happens to papers and personal belongings that we have not seen yet?
We do not throw those away. Letters, photographs, documents and jewellery go into separate boxes. If we are in doubt, we send a photograph first and wait for your answer.
How soon can the survey take place in Gouda?
Usually within 1 to 3 working days. The clearance itself we normally schedule within one to two weeks. If the handover date is already within a week, do give us a call: we can often work faster.
What do you do with items that can still be used?
Usable furniture and household goods go to a second hand shop in Gouda or elsewhere in Midden-Holland, or to a charity. The rest we separate into wood, metal, plastic and electronics and take to the right processor.
What if there is asbestos in the property?
That occurs in houses built before 1994, in the city centre and in districts such as Korte Akkeren and Oosterwei. Only certified contractors are allowed to remove asbestos. During the survey we point out anything suspect and we schedule the clearance straight after the removal work.
Can the carpet come out as well?
Yes. Carpet, laminate, skirting boards, curtain rails and light fittings we take away if you say so during the survey. It is then simply part of the fixed price.
About Gouda
What makes Gouda different from an average city
The city centre is home to many older people and many private tenants, often in small flats above shops. Young families move on to Goverwelle or Westergouwe. And a sizeable group of Gouda residents work in Rotterdam, The Hague or Utrecht, commute along the A12 and A20 and move again as soon as the household grows or shrinks. As a result almost every kind of clearance comes up here, from a studio above the Lange Groenendaal to a family home with a full shed.
The ground plays a part too. The old city stands on wooden piles in the peat soil, which leaves floors subsided and thresholds out of true. Westergouwe was built in the deep polder on the south west side. One house calls for dismantling on a narrow staircase, the next for a large van at the door.
From Bodegraven we drive to Gouda in a quarter of an hour along the A12. In the city centre we come with a smaller van and a loading and unloading exemption from the municipality.
